Top crime novels – Meet Lou Mason

What makes Lou Mason tick?

Lou Mason is a fourth generation Kansas City resident and lawyer. Orphaned at the age of three, he was brought up by his aunt, Claire Mason, the other lawyer in the family, and her long term partner and homicide detective Harry Ryman. Lou’s parents’ death in a car accident was mysterious, and it still troubles him in his quieter moments. Not that his life is often quiet… far from it!

Powerful influences

Aunt Claire inspired Lou to become a lawyer, instilling in him her deep-rooted faith in the law’s capacity to heal, protect and make whole. But he was seduced by a law school professor’s cynical beliefs and abandoned Claire’s ideals, aiming for big money instead.

Chasing the big bucks

Sullivan & Christenson, a large Kanas City law firm, recruited Lou with promises of big cases and even bigger bucks. He lasted a couple of months before the firm collapsed spectacularly after two senior Partners were murdered. On solving the case he started fresh and finally began practising the law the way aunt Claire always knew he was meant to: with honour, for the good of his community.

Mason the man

Mason is a powerful, sexy man, more than six feet of hard muscle and once a keen rugby player. He’s loyal and principled, both to a fault. His wry, sarcastic sense of humour and knack for top class banter are disarming, sometimes obscuring a recklessly brave spirit that’s genuinely passionate about justice. As such his one-man law firm sees him diving into dark waters to take on cases most lawyers would run a mile from.

Mason’s women

Lou Mason has a sensitive side, hidden behind a fusillade of wise-cracks and one-liners. His ex-wife Kate was a huge mistake, a relationship founded on lust that proved to have no real substance, and although he’s occasionally lonely, he’s wary. But clever, attractive women flock his way and he navigates the risk-infested relationship waters with varying levels of success.

Kanas City

Lou loves his hometown with the same kind of passion he lavishes on his work and his dog. And it shows, with frequent enjoyable diversions into descriptions of the sometimes beautiful, sometimes ugly city he adores.
